One of Indonesia’s key strikers, Ramadhan Sananta, shared insights into the friendship within the national team off the pitch. The Persis Solo forward emphasized the pivotal role played by head coach Shin Tae-yong in bolstering the team’s mental strength. He credited the South Korean coach’s discipline and assertiveness for fostering unity among the players.

Speaking to Telecom Asia Sport, Sananta dismissed claims of discord between local players and diaspora members.

We are a family. Whether diaspora or local, there’s no difference. We always maintain good communication because it’s crucial. Coach Shin constantly emphasizes teamwork and avoiding blame.

Sananta, who began his professional career with PS Harjuna Putra before shining at PSM Makassar and moving to Persis Solo, acknowledged that player cohesion owes much to Coach Shin’s methods and approach.

Off the pitch, he’s humorous and approachable. But on the field, he’s very strict. Coach Shin always says, ‘When you’re on the field, give 100% focus to the game.'

Although Indonesia is still considered a “developing team,” Sananta believes that unity plays a vital role in achieving significant milestones, such as reaching the semifinals in key tournaments.

However, representing the national team comes with its challenges. Sananta recounted a particularly emotional moment when he received a red card during the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar.

It wasn’t intentional. I was initially shown a yellow card, but it was later upgraded to red. I was confused because Coach Shin had trusted me, and I ended up with a red card. It was heartbreaking. But Coach Shin wasn’t angry.

The incident, however, became a valuable lesson for him and the team.

That moment taught me about responsibility. Coach Shin didn’t get mad but instead offered motivation.

He also highlighted the mental transformation under Shin Tae-yong’s leadership.

Coach Shin once said that Indonesian players used to fear any opponent. But now, he’s changed that mindset. We face every opponent, whether it’s Australia or South Korea. Don’t be scared before the game. Coach Shin has reshaped the players’ character.

Tactically, Sananta explained how Shin’s approach influences his playing style.

Tactically, Coach Shin focuses on ball possession and counter-attacks. As a striker, he wants me to constantly find space, keep moving. If the opponent’s defender has the ball, I have to press immediately.

Born in Riau Islands, Sananta grew up in a modest environment before making his international debut in 2022 against Curacao. His rapid adaptation as a young striker has been instrumental for Indonesia, including contributing to the team’s gold medal victory at the 2023 SEA Games—the country’s first in 32 years.

Sananta’s journey has inspired many young Indonesians. From starting in Liga 3 with PS Harjuna Putra to becoming a key player for the national team, he proves that hard work and unity are the keys to success. With a coach as influential as Shin Tae-yong, Sananta’s dream of taking Indonesia to the world stage is no longer just a fantasy.
