France striker Randal Kolo Muani has spoken about his historic miss in the extra time of the final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar against Argentina (3-3 after regulation time, 2-4 on penalties).
The 24-year-old striker tried to beat Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, but was unable to get the better of him and missed the chance to give his team victory.
I still go back to that moment, I know it by heart. I said to myself: "Randal, you have to shoot on goal. I tried to shoot into the near corner, but the goalkeeper made a great save. That's fate. I lost that duel. I thought I had other options. I could have passed to Kylian (Mbappe - note) because he was also in a good position, but I didn't see him. I still have a lump in my throat. The striker has been with the French national team since 2022 and has made five appearances with them. He scored a goal in the 2-0 win over Morocco in the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup.
