Dominican Tennis Umpire Banned for Six Years for Corruption

Dominican Tennis Umpire Banned for Six Years for Corruption Read More

The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced the disqualification of Juan Gabriel Castro, a referee from the Dominican Republic.

While officiating tennis matches, an umpire records the score of each point in a special electronic device, noting the score during play. This information is transmitted to the betting service provider and is then displayed in the betting lines of sportsbooks.

Juan Gabriel Castro intentionally reported incorrect scores during matches to ensure that a specific outcome appeared favorable for betting. Three matches were recorded where Castro engaged in this misconduct.

As a result, the tennis umpire has been banned for six years and fined $6,000. During the entire period of his disqualification, he is prohibited from officiating or attending tennis matches organized by the governing bodies of the sport.
