China Telecom tests 5G electricity network slicing

China Telecom Jiangsu, State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) Nanjing Power Supply Company, and Huawei have announced the completion of a 5G electricity network slice test in Nanjing.

The successful trial is both the industry's first electricity network slice test under a real power grid environment, and the first to comply with the latest 5G standalone specifications from the 3GPP, the companies said.

Electricity network slicing involves implementing a smart electric grid by using 5G network slicing to enable scenarios including millisecond-level precise power load control, collecting information from low voltage distribution systems and support for distributed power supplies.

A standalone 5G electricity network slice enhances bidirectional communication between power grids and end users, and ensures precise management of small power units on power grid terminals of overloaded power grids.

During the trial, 5G base stations were deployed in the Drum-Tower Square and Lishui District. The infrastructure achieved an average 35ms end-to-end latency, meeting meet mission-critical requirements for millisecond-level precise management of load processing units on telecom networks.

“This successful test is a breakthrough for SA networks in the 5G vertical market. We will continue to collaborate with SGCC and Huawei to leverage key national research and China Telecom's 5G trial resources to make innovations and build a 5G electricity ecosystem,” commented Zhan Mingfei, deputy GM of China Telecom Jiangsu's government and enterprise customer department.

“The painstaking experiment with the 5G electricity slice will also provide China Telecom with extensive experience in providing high standard 5G solutions for diversified vertical industries."
