The World Boxing Council (WBC) has mandated that undisputed world champion in the light heavyweight division Dmitry Bivol must defend his title against David Benavidez, the WBC interim champion.

On February 23, Bivol won a majority decision against Artur Beterbiev. His professional record stands at 24 wins (12 by knockout) and one loss.

Benavidez last fought in February 2025, where he defeated David Morrell by unanimous decision. He has a perfect record of 30 wins (24 by knockout) with no losses.
