Birmingham City Fire Head Coach Wayne Rooney

Former England national team striker, coach Wayne Rooney has left the post of Birmingham City head coach, as reported by the club's press service.

Garry Cook, the club's president
Unfortunately, Wayne's time with us did not go as planned and we have decided to move in a different direction. The search for a new coach begins immediately.

The 62-year-old Steve Spooner, who was part of Rooney's coaching staff, will take temporary charge of the team, with the Blues continuing their search for a permanent head coach.

Rooney, 38, who is a five-time English champion with Manchester United, Champions League (2008) and Europa League (2017) winner, took charge of Birmingham in October 2023 on a three-and-a-half year contract. Birmingham played 15 matches under his leadership, where they won only twice, drew four times and lost nine times.

With a total of 28 points from 26 rounds, the Blues are in twentieth place (out of twenty-four) in the Championship table.
