Former Chinese football player and ex-head coach of the national team Li Tie has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for his involvement in corruption schemes, according to The Paper.
Investigations revealed that between 2019 and 2021, the 47-year-old received bribes totaling over 50 million yuan (approximately seven million dollars) and secured his position as the coach of the China national football team through fraud. Li Tie managed the team from 2020 to 2021.
In November 2022, the former player was arrested, and during the investigation, he confessed to bribing officials for his appointment to the national team and also admitted to organizing fixed matches in the Chinese second league. In February 2024, Li Tie was already sentenced to life imprisonment for bribery.
