Javier Mendez Confesses He Didn't Want To Coach Velasquez When He Found Out He Was Mexican

AKA Hall of Famer Javier Mendez revealed that he didn't want to train former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez before he met him.

In an interview with YouTube channel Red Corner MMA, Mendez said:

I remember our first meeting with Cain. I think it was 2006. His manager said he has an amazing heavyweight with great stamina that I would like. And I replied: “Great.” As soon as the manager told me that he was Mexican, I lost interest, thinking: “He must be a fat Mexican, a good fighter, but too heavy, overweight.” I’ve never seen a fit Mexican heavyweight.

As a reminder, Cain Velasquez was arrested and jailed for more than eight months in 2022 on charges of attempted murder of a man accused of molesting his 4-year-old son. The fighter was later released on bail.

Velasquez, 41, last stepped into the octagon in February 2019 at UFC on ESPN 1, losing to Francis Ngannou by first-round knockout. He has 14 wins and three losses on his record.
