Adam Peaty Tests Positive For Covid Hours After Silver Medal Win

Team GB has confirmed that Adam Peaty tested positive for Covid-19 hours after winning a silver medal in the men's 100m breaststroke final in Paris.

Peaty finished just 0.02 seconds behind Italy's Nicolo Martinenghi, who claimed gold in 59.03 seconds, while Peaty shared the silver with USA's Nic Fink, both finishing in 59.05 seconds.

Despite feeling unwell with a sore throat prior to the race, Peaty stated he wouldn't use his condition as an "excuse" for the result. Following the final, Team GB released a statement saying:

Adam Peaty began feeling unwell on Sunday, ahead of his men’s 100m breaststroke final. In the hours after the final, his symptoms became worse and he was tested for COVID early on Monday morning. He tested positive at that point.

The team added that all necessary precautions were being taken for the health of the delegation.

Peaty hopes to return for the relay events later in the swimming program, with the mixed medley relay scheduled for August 2.
