World marathon record holder Kelvim Kiptum from Kenya died in a car accident at the age of 24, former Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga said.

The marathon runner's coach, Gervais Hakizimana, also became a victim of the accident along with Kiptum. The accident happened in Kenya's Kaptagat region. Kiptum reportedly failed to control the vehicle and crashed into a tree.

Kiptum and Hakizimana died on the spot. The woman who was in the passenger seat in the car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Last year in Chicago, Kiptum ran the marathon distance in two hours and 35 seconds, setting a world record that was ratified last week.
