For the first time in 14 years, the organizers of the WTA 1000 and Masters tournaments at Indian Wells, USA, will be setting unequal prize money for men and women.
The last time the BNP Paribas Open implemented unequal prize distribution was in 2011, when men received higher prizes from the first round to the quarterfinals, while women had higher payouts from the semifinals to the title.
In 2025, men will earn more than women at every stage of the tournament in Indian Wells. The difference in prize money for winners will amount to nearly $77,000.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from March 5 to March 16, 2025, with a total prize pool of $19.3 million.
The current champion of the Masters at Indian Wells is Carlos Alcaraz of Spain, who is the third-ranked player in the ATP world rankings. Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek, ranked second in the WTA, claimed victory at the 2024 tournament.
